How do you take a photograph of an explosion in the sky?

When it comes to a fireworks display, planning and anticipating what you'll need are essential. Even though a fireworks display is planned ahead of time, the spectacular moment when the fireworks explode in the sky is still a split second when everything needs to work right for you to get the best picture. Obviously, you'll need to be prepared for some equipment issues if you want to get your camera set up and ready to capture that moment when the sky explodes with glory. Therefore, from an equipment perspective...a stand. The fireworks activity is so dramatic that if you don't stabilize your camera, the shot will be blurry and inconvenient to you and anyone else you might want to sell it to. To make changes as needed, the tripod should be portable and adjustable.

Explosions in the Sky

.a shutter release that works from the outside.

  • .Equipment that can be used at night because your subject will come up at that time. A head-mounted flashlight can be purchased at any camping store so that you can still use both hands to handle your gear while aiming the light at the camera.

  • .A chair that can be moved because there will be people waiting.Anything else that will help you get through the wait, like music, water, or food.should also be part of your preparations.

  • You need to be able to adjust the shutter speed and have the camera set up to respond to manual focus because the fireworks explosion happens quickly and suddenly. This will allow you to use your eyes and ears to determine precisely when to take that picture.

The location is the key to a great fireworks photo or series. You want to choose a spot with a great view of the area of the sky where the most action will take place. Because of this, you might have to stand on a bridge, on top of a building, or on a hill to get away from the people who are coming to see the show. Start early because finding this won't be easy. It is not unreasonable to "scope out" your location days in advance and arrive hours in advance to claim that spot. Experience will be one of your best teachers when it comes to finding the right location, setting your camera's focus and shutter speeds, and positioning the view from a secure location so you can capture the rocket as it explodes. Before you attempt the "keeper" shot, therefore, find a way to practice shooting at other fireworks displays. In exchange for a few free shots, minor league baseball clubs will frequently permit you to take photographs of their fireworks displays. Before preparing for a larger show, you can try out your experiment here and get your bearings.

Predict the explosion you want to capture as soon as the show starts. Use the first five minutes of the show to make sure you have the right sky location scouted, rather than snapping it. The sound of the rocket rising and the anticipated amount of time before the eruption can be used to time the best times to get the shot.

With some experience you will get your sixth sense about where and when to snap that perfect photo and when you are done, you will have some spectacular shots to include with your portfolio or to display proudly. Additionally, this will result in additional work photographing sky explosions.
